What the Bible says about: backsliding

Devotional Guidance

My beloved child, hear my gentle voice. When we speak of backsliding, the Scriptures reveal a deep sorrow—a turning away from the heart that belongs to the Lord. It is a painful journey where the people forget the source of their life, seeking false comforts and idols instead of true devotion. This wandering brings shame, souring the spiritual waters, and a sense of deep distress, as they realize they have forgotten the One who is their true salvation. Yet, know this: God’s love is greater than any wandering. Though the path may seem lost, His heart is filled with boundless mercy. He calls us back not with anger, but with an open invitation, reminding us that true healing and salvation are found only when we turn toward Him. There is always a way back, a path of grace awaiting those who seek to return to the light. Trust in His compassion, and know that He is ready to heal and restore you.
Hosea 4:16-19
16. For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place. 17. Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone. 18. Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her rulers with shame do love, Give ye. 19. The wind hath bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.
Jeremiah 3:6-8
6. The LORD said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot. 7. And I said after she had done all these things , Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it .
Jeremiah 3:11-13
11. And the LORD said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah. 12. Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever.
Job 3:26
26. I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.
Jeremiah 3:21-24
21. A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the LORD their God. 22. Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God. 23. Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.
